Ears (Usi)

A fine memoir by one of the best writers in English today. The best thing about this book is that it will make you want to read so many more really good books when you're through with it - and not only by Martin Amis.

I don't know Czech, but I do like ecclectic, multi-layered post-punk rock. This is it. And, judging by all the other people at D.C.'s Black Cat Club last year, who came to see the band touring in support of this album, there are a lot of other people who agree.

From a terrific Nick Hornby book, John Cusack is perfect as a man whose constant failed relationships have led him to question his obsession with rock music. Slightly marred by a corny ending, it's still as good an evocation of why people love rock music, and what it means to them.

Rooty
by the Basement Jaxx

Just because a book is short, gripping, and a pleasure to read doesn't mean it isn't serious literature full of brilliant ideas. This book is a collection of loosely related short stories, all of which intersect in the bizarre world of interwar Comintern politics. Not a great anti-communist novel, but a great novel, by one of Yugoslavia's greatest authors.

A great, fun, hip dance act. Enjoyable party music for the rest of the summer, and beyond.

Woody Allen's last pure comedy, and maybe his best. If you like Woody Allen, and haven't seen it, shame on you. Even if you hate Woody Allen, give this film a chance: it features none of the narcissism or ponderousness (or misogyny) that have made him insufferable of late, A must-see comedy classic.
