Report
from the House of Lambs:
Contrary to its name The House of the Lambs
is not an English pub but the house of Jana Lamb (the CEU UK Alimni
Coordinator) and her husband Mike Lamb (not directly connected to
CEU - to the best of my knowledge).
On Saturday the 17th of August 2002, the
place accomodated an unsual amount of people giving the British based
CEU alumni the possibility to meet each other. Around 15 alumni and
their friends and family living or temporarily staying in Great Britain
showed up.
This was a rare opportunity to meet the
people who once chose to spend time in the Budapest, Prague or Warsaw
CEU centers and hear about their post-CEU career paths. The variety
of attendees fostered this late night outdoor picnic resulting in
an enjoyable and interesting event. Chats, talks and jokes were lovely
and accompanied by a full fledged table of Eastern European goodies.
Personally, I am happy to admit that for
a fresh CEU alumni like myself (2001 Sociology graduate) the meeting
was a great opportunity to talk to my elder friends and learn about
their post CEU career paths. And I can guarantee that these elder
CEU alumni can provide a treasury of information to all alumni. The
most important thing though was the fun of meeting people from the
same part of the world and feeling, even for a while, like being
back at home.
So, CEU all next time.

From the Northerners...
The CEU alumni gathering on Saturday 17th
August was The Event of This Summer. For us, the alumni studying and
living in the North of UK, it was also a possibility to enjoy the
Beautiful South on a fantastically warm weekend and to meet the Southerners...
The House of the Lambs and both Jana and
her husband Mike were very welcoming and hospitable. Apart from some
genuinely Balkan delicacies such as the Shopska salad, the Tarator
and the Baklava, there were also burgers (to remember Elvis Presley)
and some truly British specials such as the fire works (courtesy of
Mike). Unfortunately our former co-ordinator Alan Renwick was fighting
a loosing battle with pressing writing matters and therefore couldn't
attend...I did leave half of the vegetarian food for you, Alan...honest...
Civilised conversations revolved around
the happy times at CEU, the visit of George Soros to the London School
of Economics, the persona of the Pope and many others. This resulted
in several bottles of fiery Bulgarian rakia vanishing before 10 o`clock.
Irina, an alumni from the first year of
the CEU raised a toast to George Soros thanking him for giving us
all "the opportunity to do something with our lives".
All in all, it has been great to meet,
talk and appreciate the long and winding roads that each and every
one of us had to travel to reach the House of the Lambs on the night
of August 17th 2002. Lets hope that many more such occasions are forthcoming...

Report from the BBC...
CEU alumni meetings are not only fun and
pleasure, but also is a very stimulating and learning experience.
We can all catch up on recent developments with mutual friends (there
are always mutual friends among the CEU alumni!!!) and find out if
old friendships are in urgent need of resuscitation!!!
